Sacrament of the Sick
May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up
Are any among you sick? Let them call for the elders of the Church to pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick ones, and the Lord will raise them up; and if they have committed any sins, they will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)
The Sacrament of the Sick, or Anointing, celebrates God’s healing touch and will, shown to us by Jesus Christ in many miracles, or displays, of healing.
Christ’s care for the sick and suffering continues in the Christian community. Miraculous cures are rare, though they do happen.
The Sacrament expresses Christ’s compassion and celebrates the touch of Christ in his Body the Church. It’s grace gives us encouragement, and the spiritual gifts of patience and courage.
Any member of the Church who falls sick.
Whenever there is a significant deterioration in their condition.
The Sacrament can also be received before an operation, in which case the rite includes a prayer for the surgeons.
In Hospital you can ask the staff to contact the ‘on-call’ Catholic priest. Hospitals will not contact the on-call priest automatically, you must make your wishes known to the staff.
